Project Name: |
Care and education for children with Down syndrome, autism and other mental and physical disabilities. |
Project Location: |
Northern Quito, behind the Liga Stadium |
Project Description: |
Caters to education for children with Down syndrome, autism and other disabilities. Its mission is to improve the independence and give value to the capacity of its students through an integrated system involving the family and society. It aims to give them a quality education in all subjects (art, dance and particularly theater in addition to academic subjects), including workshops and job training for the older students. The school has up to 70 students between the ages of 3 and 25 years old, split into groups of about 10 students to one teacher and one assistant in each classroom. Each year, the students make crafts, chocolate and Christmas cards to sell to family and friends, as well as put on a theater show. The school is funded both by tuition (up to the amount that each family can feasibly pay) and donations, and the students have resources including a garden, playground, gymnasium and a small theater. |
Range of Tasks: |
This school is looking for volunteers willing to devote their time to humanitarian service and contribute ideas, creativity and talents. This school appreciates receiving volunteers to help in the classroom to provide more personal attention to each student. Depending on the volunteer’s interests and experience, they can help teach a variety of subjects and ages.
Along with working in the classroom, the foundation would really appreciate a volunteer that could help with a few administrative and promotional activities such as: marketing of the foundation to increase donations, designs of the artwork and products made by the students that they sell to keep the school running, and translation of Spanish to English of the website and other promotional materials. This could be done for half the day while in the classroom the other half of the day. Further, volunteers could get involved with school activities such as the chocolate making the students do, or the annual play they put on.
