Project Name:

Work in education projects such as an afterschool program, elementary school or high school

Project Location:
Tena, 5 hours East of Quito in the Amazon Basin (oriente region of Ecuador)
Project Description:
Under Tena's Municipality Department of Human Development, the Centro Preventivo Ubaldo Bonucelliis an after school program for kids ages 5-18 of an at-risk population, such as those living in poverty, dealing with abuse at home or are living in foster care. At this center, they receive homework help, computer classes and tutoring. In addition, they have workshops in bread making, bakery, pizza making, and artesenia (crafts) so that kids can learn these trades to get jobs later on. Here a volunteer can get involved in any of these activities to provide support to the teachers and guidance to the kids. If a volunteer is there for a sufficient amount of time, there is also the possibility of teaching a workshop or program to the kids. In the future they are looking to expand their center to be able to receive kids in foster care overnight as a permanent place to stay.
  • Colegio San Jose is eager to receive volunteers who are willing to primarily teach English to these high school students, although you would also be able to help in other subjects as well. Here you would be an assistant to one of the English teachers and help particularly with pronunciation and grammar of the students. No teaching experience necessary.
  • In Tena there is the possibility of working with an elementary schoolas well.  Here you would also be an assistant to a teacher and could teach a variety of subjects depending on your interests to younger children.
Range of Tasks:

As stated above, it depends on your interests and experience, but can get involved in the variety of activities in the elementary or high school, or the after school program.  If you will be there for an extended amount of time and are interested in teaching a skill that you know, that would certainly be a possibility.

Time Committment:
4 weeks minimum
Skills required:
Some experience in social work or work with children, depending on program
Schedule:
To be arranged with the program they are working with. The schools run in the mornings 7:30-12:30 and the afterschool program from 2-5pm but there is also work preparing lessons and receiving school groups in the mornings at the center.
Other Information:
Tena is the capital of the state of Napo about 5 hours from Quito. It is a town of around 20,000 inhabitants and serves as a regional center and a jumping of point for activities and travel into the Amazon.
