Project Description: |
Shayari is an ecotourism centre run by a Kichwa community, and is a great example of community self-management and conservation of natural resources. The project aims to make the most of the substantial primary forest, and in particular Lake Moretecocha close by, without exploiting it. The project is an alternative source of income to environmentally destructive practices of deforestation, and also aims to increase environmental education and change attitude to deforestation. |
Range of Tasks: |
There is a range of projects that volunteers can undertake at Shayari. Long-term students and professionals in the felid of tourism can carry out various tourism management projects at the cabanas, and in relation to the services it offers its visitors.
Volunteers with a biology background can help implement a management plan for the animals in the rescue centre. Volunteers can also assist with animal feeding and care, and park maintenance.
Volunteers can great assist local guides by teaching them English so that they can communicate more effectively with the tourists and command a higher wage. |
Time Committment: |
One month, although for more involved projects, and for meaningful outcomes, more time in necessary. |
Skills required: |
Volunteers and interns that undertake work at Shayari are required to be motivated, take initiative and be able to work effectively independently. For those who wish to teach English, previous teaching experience is preferable but not essential |
