Project Name:
Medical, health and nursing internship
Project Location:
The Hospital Delfina Torres de Concha, Esmeraldas
Project Description:

There exist various possibilities for students of medicine (2nd year onwards), nursing, midwifery, and other health students to gain valuable experience in different departments, including the emergency room, pediatrics, ...

Generally, students are given a much greater degree of responsibility than at home which means you can gain a lot of experience quickly. You will be expected to jump in and help out in this underfunded and understaffed hospital setting.

Range of Tasks:
Depends upon each students speciality.
Time Committment:
One month minimum
Skills required:
Medical students must be in at least the 2nd year of study
Schedule:
Shift work arranged in conjunction with staff
Other comments:
The population of Esmeraldas is predominantly black, descended from slaves who escaped from a ship run aground, mixed with mestizos and the original Chachi inhabitants. Students find that although it is a very poor town, it is rich in culture and overwhelmingly friendly and engaging. Because it is very poor there is some crime, but sensible precautions help to avoid problems.
Possible Donations:
Any kind of medical supplies; rubber gloves, syringes, masks, medicines, dressings, etc. Contact us for more information.
