Project Name: |
Work in Afro-Ecuadorian community of Chota. |
Project Location: |
Located about 30 minutes outside of Ibarra, near the borders of provinces Imbabura and Carchi. |
Project Description: |
Foundation ADIN consists of a group of projects that focuses on sustainable community tourism and education projects. Through ADIN, volunteers have the option of spending at least one week in a few of the projects that ADIN works with, or a longer period of time in one project.
The community of Chota has a rich and unique Ecuadorian culture with a large African heritage and has recently started a variety of community projects that volunteers can get involved in. Further, Chota is known around Ecuador because many of the nationally famous Ecuadorian soccer players are born here. In addition, El Chota is known for their traditions in dance and handicrafts, as well as for their festivals during Carnaval in February. |
Range of Tasks: |
- Volunteers can work in the local school teaching a variety of subjects
- Volunteers can work in the family gardens in the community, teaching techniques in organic agriculture or permaculture if you have that knowledge
- Recently, the women’s group named Esperanza de un Pueblo received a donation of a breadmaking machine and have opened a panaderia in the community, so volunteers can get involved not only in that project but other projects of the women’s group
- Chota would like to increase tourism in the community and the area and would like volunteers with knowledge to help them do that. Nearby is a museum of paleontology, and the community would like to continue working towards small scale tourism
- Volunteers can help in the local health center if they have knowledge in medicine
