Shelby and Alex’s "Lee Conmigo"/"Read with Me" book project in Estero de Plátano - Goal $800

This project aims to raise $800 to start a summer reading program for students in Primary and Secondary School.  During the school year, students read different books and, as a consequence, have no opportunity to discuss what they read with their peers. In the summer months it is common for students to fall behind in reading proficiency due to a lack of structure. This program would provide an opportunity for students to improve their reading proficiency and develop their critical thinking skills by reading the same books and analyzing and discussing the texts together. Micro-enterprise for women in Estero de Plátano - Cost $250.00

A group of women in Estero de Plátano on the Pacific coast of Ecuador are trying to start a small beach-side food stall to sell local fare to day-visitors to boost their meagre incomes. Yanapuma seeks to help them by buying some basic supplies - silverware, a blender, a plastic table and chairs, etc, to help them get going. We see this as a vital step for these women in the development of a locally-owned business that will benefit their families and the community in general. Yanapuma will support them with the necessary training to run and manage a small enterprise. Estero de Platano

Computer training for community groups in Bua - Cost $600

In the village of Bua we are working with various groups - cacao growers association, women's community bank, cabildo, reforestation group, and the cultural group. Members of each need to learn computer skills to be able to write official letters, and actively develop the interests of their respective group. For many of them it will be the first time they have used a PC. We seek funding to offer a series of training workshops on computer use over a period of 6 months.

Scholarships for secondary education - Cost $300 per year

Aside from 10 scholarships in the village of Estero de Plátano that we currently support, we will be launching a similar scheme in the village of Bua in 2011 to encourage Tsa´chila children to continue studying. The cost covers uniforms and materials and transport to and from the secondary school for one academic year.

Social and organizational processes in Estero de Plátano - Cost $200 per month

The principal stumbling block to sustainable development in any community is the lack of innate social and organizational skills to maintain the processes of change. Yanapuma is committed to providing the technical support to community groups in Estero de Plátano to develop these skills. What is needed is not large sums of money for infrastructure or complex projects, but the funding to maintain a social/community worker active in the community to guide their activities until they are capable of maintining the processes themselves. $200 keeps us active in this area for around 10 days per month. You can contribute any amount to this ongoing process.

Training farmers in Bua to use chemicals safely and responsibly: Cost $250.00

Our aim eventually is to realize a more sustainable and chemical-free form of agriclture with the Tsa'chila. Currently they use chemicals without understanding the health risks and damage to the environment that result from their actions (mixing chemicals with their hands, not wearing protection, and rinsing out containers directly in the rivers for example). It is vital that we start to educate them in the safe use of chemicals. Learn more about Bua.

Collection of seeds of endangered and rare trees in Bua: Cost $205.00

As part of our efforts to protect the environment we are initiating a reforestation project in Bua. One stage of this is to collect seeds from the remaining areas of forest to create a nursery of these disappearing species. We will purchase the materials necessary to care for the seedlings and send locals to search for seeds as they are available. Learn more about Bua.

Summer School for scholarship students in Estero de Plátano - Cost $480

Yanapuma is sponsoring 10 children in Estero de Plátano to study at secondary school. One of the problems we have seen in our second year of sponsoring these children is that the quality of their primary education in the village has been poor, which makes it hard for them to succeed in their secondary education, despite the constant presence of our interns who help them with their homework. We propose to hire one of the teachers during the long break (January to April) to work with our interns to provide additional coaching that will help them catch up to the level of their peers from larger communities. Two days per week at $20 per day (including travel) for 12 weeks.
