The sierra community of Peribuela lies
to the north of Quito. This small and relatively isolated community
lives mostly by farming the steep Andean hillsides, growing maize,
potatoes and other vegetables, as well as fruits such as peaches and
apples. Higher up there is a small ecological reserve that contains the
original forest that once covered the Andes in the time of the Incas.
The community has been renovating the hacienda
to create a visitor center, which also houses volunteers during their
stay. Past volunteers have worked on creating and renovating trails in
the forest as well as building bathrooms for visitors and working in the
gardens.
