              Yanapuma Internships  
 

 

Internships are offered for specific duties and tasks within the foundation. Interns will work from 3-12 months in the office, in the field, or a combination of the two. Some time will be allowed for students to carry out work related to their studies. However these are primarily work-based internships.

GENERAL REQUIREMENTS FOR EACH POSITION:

  • Fluent Spanish (or an intermediate level + Spanish classes)
  • Minimum stay of 3 months
  • Preferably a Master Student or Graduated Professional

CURRENT INTERNSHIP POSITIONS

  • Permaculture Practitioner

    Minimum length of time: 6 months
    Level of Spanish: Advanced
    Location: Caimito, (Esmerladas province)
    Requirements: BA (Preferably MA) in agriculture or related field and prior experience in permaculture

    Yanapuma Foundation is looking for a permaculture practitioner for the community of Caimito, on the Northern coast of Ecuador. Caimito and the surrounding area is characterized by mono-crop farming which is degrading the quality of the soil. We are looking to introduce permaculture techniques in order to address this, and diversify agricultural production in the area. We are looking for an intern with considerable knowledge and experience of permaculture to:

      • Give training to community members on how to incorporate permaculture into their agricultural methods
      • Work on the design and implementation of a model permaculture farm
      • Teach the community about organic gardening and implement and organic gardening project

    Specialist in Education

    Minimum length of time: 6 months
    Level of Spanish: Advanced
    Locations: Bua (Santo Domingo de los Tsachilas) and Puka Chikta (Napo)
     Requirements: BA ( Preferably MA) in education or related field with relevant experience in an internacional setting


    Yanapuma Foundation is looking for creative specialists in education to work in schools in the communities of Bua and Puka Chikta to help improve the quality of education. The quality of teaching in rural schools in Ecuador is very poor, and many teachers have little or no formal training. Materials are lacking, and teaching methods are often outdated and inappropriate. We are looking for experienced teachers or professionals or Master’s Students in Education to:

      • Work together with teachers to improve the current curriculum
      • Give workshops and training to teachers on creative teaching methods
      • Improve the communication between parents and children through workshops and training
      • Create groups/clubs in different areas (art, recycling, etc) and motivate teachers and students to be involved

    Locations: Bua (Santo Domingo de los Tsachilas Province), Puka Chikta (Napo Province) and Quito


    Yanapuma is looking for volunteers to teach in different areas (English, mathematics, art, etc) and help the current teachers with existing subjects by adding creativity and new ideas to current curriculum and materials in a culturally relevant way. We are currently looking for teachers.

    Doctor / Health Promoter

    Minimum Length of Time: 6 months
    Level of Spanish: Advanced
    Location: Bua(Santo Domingo de los Tsachilas Province)

    Yanapuma is looking for a doctor or a health promoter who can work in a new preventative health centre in Bua to improve health conditions. Different projects include:

      • Design and hold workshops in communities and at schools regarding prevention of disease
      • Make contact and work together with municipalities to increase access to health and medicine in communities
      • Make visits to families and to the school for medical checkups
      • Create educational materials for the health center
      • Make contact with health related NGOs to arrange ongoing support for the community
      • Promote the importance of health in the community

    Psychologist / Social Worker

          For a number of different indigenous communities, Yanapuma is looking for culturally sensitive social workers who can:

      • Give counseling and psychological support to community members
      • Create and Hold workshops about leadership, self esteem and communication

    Waste Management / Recycle Specialist

    Yanapuma foundation is looking for a specialist in waste management and/or recycling, who can work in an indigenous community to:

      • Research the current way that waste is managed within the community, and reasons for it being that way
      • Set up recycling programs at the local school and teach the kids about recycling and waste management through fun activities
      • Work together with local institutions to set up systems for garbage collection, recycling etc.
      • Give training in schools and to parents regarding recycling: (why, how, etc.) and involve local community members in recycling and waste management projects

    Social Worker/ Community Organiser

    Minimum length of time: 6 months
    Level of Spanish: Advanced
    Locations: Bua (Santo Domingo de los Tsachilas Province), Estero de Platano (Esmeraldas province)

    Yanapuma Foundation is looking for an intern specialized in culturally sensitive social work to work in the communities of Bua and Estero de Platano in order to improve communication, motivation and organization both within the community, and with regards to its external relations. One of the key factors inhibiting empowerment and community development in these communities is a lack of self-esteem, leadership and organization on behalf of the community members. We are looking for an intern to work independently in the following areas:

      • Create and hold workshops about topics such as communication, self esteem, leadership and human relationships

    Fundraiser/Researcher

    Minimum length of time: 9 months
    Level of Spanish: Advanced
    Location: Quito

    Yanapuma Foundation is looking for a resourceful, hardworking person to obtain funding for specific projects. This internship is office based. Tasks include:

    • investigate possible sources of grants for specific projects,
    • write proposals,
    • prepare necessary documentation and submit proposals
    • follow up on proposals

    Marketing and web development

    Minimum length of time: 6 months
    Level of Spanish: Intermediate
    Location: Quito

    This internship will suit marketing/web management students and is office based. It will involve:

      • ongoing development and implementation of a marketing strategy for the foundation and Spanish school, for local, international, and web-based public
      • redesign of the Spanish school website
      • creation and distribution of promotional materials (e.g. flyers, posters etc)
      • creating partnerships with alternative travel agencies and other organizations overseas to recruit more volunteers and Spanish students

    Internship fee: One-time registration of $75.00

    If interns stay in a community as part of their work they will pay the community directly $8.00 per day to cover food and lodging, and will be responsible for their own transport costs.
