The community of Puca Chicta lies across the Napo river from our other project, Kamak Maki. The population are native Kichwa, who speak both their own language and Spanish. People live by farming small plots of maize, yucca, plantain, cacao and coffee.
Our work in this community includes carrying out various construction projects with groups of international volunteers in the local school to improve its infrastructure, teaching English and other subjects via individual long-term volunteers, as well as working to install a clean water system.
We have recently built a new dining room and kitchen for the school, plus a new classroom and library which we are constructing in 2009.
Also during 2009 we will be collaborating with the Portland Oregon branch of Engineers Without Borders to put in a new water system.
