1. Full-time community worker for Bua de los Tsachila |
| This position has been funded until December! |
The greatest impediments to the development of the Tsachila in general have been their lack of internal organization, lack of democratic participation, and suspiciousness of outside authorities and organizations, and even of other Tsachila. We aim to help them develop participatory and organizational skills to give them the tools to control their own development

4. Pilot study to determine the applicability of ecological toilets and artificial reed beds on the Galapagos Islands. |
|
The Galapagos Islands have been declared by UNESCO as a world heritage site that is under threat, and by Ecuador´s president as needing urgent attention to prevent an ecological disaster. Our proposal is to construct ecological toilets to handle the human solid waste and artificial reed beds to treat the gray waters, leading to zero contamination by the human population. The first step is to carry out a pilot study to assess the feasability, identify possible obstacles and a suitable site to run a pilot project.
Cost: $2500 |
| 5. Scholarship program for the children of Estero de Platano |
|
One of the greatest barriers to change in this small beach-side community is the lack of educational possibilities once the children reach 13, which is when they have to start college in a town about 40 minutes away by bus. The associated costs are too high for most parents which means that their children´s education comes to an end. Yanapuma has pledged to start a scholarship program for a number of these children to get them through college and expand their options. This will start in March 2009 with the new academic year. Cost: $200 per child per year |
