In 2010 Yanapuma begins a pilot project to develop an EcoEscuelas (EcoSchools) movement in marginalized urban and rural schools in Ecuador. The goal is to develop a movement in which environmental awareness is addressed in education both through inclusion in the curriculum and through direct change work carried out on the infrastructure of the school and behaviors of the children and staff. This can also serve as a focus for pro-environmental change within the wider community.
To further this work we seek to link schools participating in the EcoEscuelas program with schools in developed countries that will allow children to directly exchange information and ideas, learn from each other, and understand and support each other's pro-environmental goals.
One of the principal obstacles in this endeavour is that schools in marginalized communities in Ecuador do not have internet, and at times do not even have computers. Thus Yanapuma is developing ways that we can act as a portal to connect schools through our webpages.
Another obstacle is the language barrier, but with new tools like Google's Translate, it is relatively easy to obtain instant translations between many languages.
